Male cardinals, with red body feathers as opposed to the tan body feathers of females, have been known to show courtship behaviors, like turning and twisting their bodies while a female cardinal is present. In addition to this typical behavior, male cardinals also perform the song dance display.
Do male and female cardinals kiss?
This looks as though the two birds are kissing, and while this may be a romantic notion, it's not true. As part of the mating ritual, the male bird will find food for the female, and will feed it to her. As he does, their beaks will touch and it will look like a kiss.
What happens when a cardinal loses it's mate?
Some cardinal pairs do break up and look for new mates, sometimes even during the nesting season. And if one member of the cardinal pair dies, the survivor will quickly look for a new mate.
Why do 2 male cardinals chase each other?
In order to protect the nests, cardinals chase off other birds, particularly other male cardinals. Cardinals spend hours fighting these intruders without giving up.
